Purpose of the Study: Appraisals of family caregivers about caregiving are an important aspect of the good health conditions of family caregivers and they improve the quality of care for frail elderly. However, a number of previous studies analyzed negative appraisals in caregiving from family caregivers and the positive aspect of the role is underscored in Japan and South Korea. The primary aim of the current study was to determine the factors related to both the negative and the positive appraisals from family caregivers who provided care to frail elderly at home in both countries.

Methods: The overall sample data included 1500 family caregivers (95%) in Japan and 930 (91%) in South Korea. The data was collected through the placement method of self-enumeration and the survey questionnaires were completed by caregivers and dropped off by interviewers when they visited their homes in Japan, and face-to-face interviews by surveyors with paper questionnaires in Korea, in October to November in 2010. Multiple regression models were used for analysis.
