Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that significantly impacts not only individuals diagnosed but also their families, particularly mothers who often serve as primary caregivers. As children with ASD transition into adulthood, the caregiving responsibilities and associated challenges persist, potentially affecting maternal quality of life (QoL). Limited research has examined the specific experiences of older mothers caring for adult children with ASD.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the quality of life among older mothers (aged 50 years and above) of adult children with autism spectrum disorder, examining factors that influence their physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 156 mothers aged 50-75 years who have adult children (18+ years) diagnosed with ASD. Participants completed standardized questionnaires including the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF), Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), and demographic questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis.
